Homeopathy is a complementary or alternative form of medicine that was developed in 1790s by a German doctor named Samuel Hahnemann. It is based on the idea that the body is capable of healing itself.
Homeopathy does not treat an illness as separate from the person experiencing it. Rather, symptoms of ill-health are seen as signs of disharmony with the person as whole. Therefore Homeopathic medicine seeks to treat the patient and not the disease.
“Like Cures Like“
Central to Homeopathic medicine is the notion that “like cures like.” That is, if a substance causes a certain symptom in a healthy person that same substance can be given in small amounts to remove those symptoms.
Finding a Remedy
In order to find a remedy your homeopath might ask you a series of questions about the condition of your health, emotional state, medical history, lifestyle and diet.
Your homeopath will then give you a homeopathic remedy, usually in the form of a pill or tincture that matches your symptoms as you experience them and may follow-up to assess the effectiveness of the remedy on your health.
Homeopathic remedies work to stimulate the body’s own healing power. This stimulus assists your own system in clearing itself of any symptoms of imbalance. The goal is to achieve a level of health so that eventually treatment is required less frequently.
The duration of your Homeopathic treatment depends very much on what sort of illness you have, as well as the other individual characteristics of your case. Chronic or long-term conditions may take longer to improve while acute complaints can be addressed quickly and improvement can sometimes be felt even in a matter of hours.
