CUSTOM ORTHOTICS

What are Custom Orthotics?

A Custom Foot Orthotic is a customized shoe insert that is used to help align, support or accommodate variations in the size and stability of the foot and proper foot mechanics.   The custom orthotic insert is made exclusively for you and will address your specific imbalances and any biomechanical misalignments (i.e. high arch or flat feet). While custom orthotics are built to last years, updated gait analysis and orthopedic foot examination is beneficial every two years, and earlier if there any physical changes in your feet, or new pain syndromes related to standing and walking. They are designed to improve your running, walking and balance in every-day and athletic activities.

Who could benefit from Custom Orthotics?

Anyone can benefit from custom orthotics. Those who spend a great deal of time on their feet, or enjoy an active lifestyle may be more prone to foot complaints caused by over stressed tissues and ligament. These complaints can progress and cause additional complaints above the feet including the knees, hips, pelvis and low back. Custom orthotics can treat a variety of lower extremity conditions, while relieving pain and improving the function of feet and lower limbs.

Conditions treated by Custom Orthotics:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Bunions
  • Pronation Syndrome
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Foot Pain (anywhere from heel, arch, or balls of feet)
  • Flat arches/high arches
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Heel bursitis
  • Shin Splints
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
  • Iliotibial Band Pain Syndrome
  • Abnormal biomechanics and gait
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Foot stress and fatigue

How do Custom Orthotics work?

Custom Orthotics properly ensure that your foot is aligned inside your footwear. Correct alignment can reduce unnecessary stresses, strains and pains in your feet, lower limbs and lower back and can improve muscle function through continued use. Over time, improper alignment can cause a number of problems in your feet, lower limbs and lower back. When the foot is properly balanced and supported, you are less likely to encounter injury or pain in these areas.

How are Custom Orthotics made?

Custom molded orthotics are fabricated by a clinical laboratory following careful evaluation and assessment of the joints and tissues of your feet, as well as a cast or impression of your foot. The joint position of your feet can be measured in a number of ways including a digital gait scanner which utilizes an electronic force plate to measure contact points, weight and position of your feet when walking or standing. Additional methods include foam box casting and plaster casting which is obtained with your foot in a neutral position for best results. This data is combined with the clinical examination of your feet and gait, then sent off to the lab for fabrication. The customized orthotic device is only fit for you and should never be shared with friends, but may be usable in several different types of footwear. Your requirements will be discussed so that you can use them as often as possible on a daily basis.
